With the sizeable increase in seed banks across the state of Hawaiʻi, more seeds can be stored on each island across the archipelago. Having more than one collection provides protection to the plant species against stochastic events and allows propagules to be available and accessible for restoration. Laukahi’s metric for this Target measures the percentage of Species of Conservation Importance (SCI) that are available at more than one facility with ex situ collections.

In 2012, Laukahi found that 51% of SCI were represented at more than one ex situ facility. Since then, efforts to duplicate seed collections by the Hawai’i Seed Bank Partnership have increased significantly. Repeated ex situ assessments in 2020 and 2023 revealed 63% and 68%, respectively, of SCI are stored at more than one facility. Also the SCI list has increased over time due to more plants having an endangered conservation assessment. This duplication is an extra layer of security against stochastic events that may affect a storage facility at any time.
