Seeds of Success Technical Protocol, Bureau of Land Management

A single, oval-shaped, dark brown seed with a textured surface, isolated on a white background.

This technical protocol is for the collection, study, and conservation of seeds from native plant species for Seeds of Success. Seeds of Success (SOS) is the national native seed collection program, led by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in partnership with a variety of federal agencies and non-federal organizations.

Hawaiian Seed Storage Behavior

Ex situ seed banking is critical for plant conservation globally, especially for threatened floras in tropical ecosystems like Hawai‘i. Seed bank managers must maximize longevity, and species managers must plan restoration before seeds lose viability. This study summarizes seed storage behavior in the Hawaiian flora to optimize storage conditions and recommend re-collection intervals to maximize viability of stored seeds.

Seeds Of Hawaii

Seeds of Hawaii, part of the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum and the University of Hawai’i, focuses on conservation biology and features the Hawaiian Rare Plant Program, which includes a Micropropagation Lab, a Rare Plant Greenhouse, and a Seed Conservation Lab.

Hawaiʻi Native Plant Material Survey

Five cantaloupe seeds placed on a clear petri dish.

The Seed Survey by Laukahi: The Hawaiʻi Plant Conservation Network aims to gather information on the collection, production, and use of native plant materials in Hawaiʻi to address supply chain shortfalls and support conservation, reforestation, and cultural uses.

Lyon Storage Report

The Hawaiʻi Seed Bank User’s Guide, created by the Hawaiʻi Seed Bank Partnership, offers comprehensive guidance on banking seeds of Hawaiʻi’s native plants, focusing on conservation practices, seed storage protocols, and longevity for conservation professionals and organizations.

Baskin Report

A solitary tree stands amidst a misty mountainous landscape.

This document presents a comprehensive analysis of seed germination ecology for Hawaiian montane species, aiming to enhance propagation and restoration efforts. It includes data on dormancy classes, optimal conditions for germination, and time requirements for dormancy break, offering valuable insights for conservation and cultivation practices.
