Laukahi is a Dedicated Alliance

Laukahi is a voluntary alliance of agencies, organizations and individuals aiming to protect Hawai‘i’s rare plant species through coordinated conservation efforts by implementing the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation.

about

Laukahi, meaning “single leaf” in the Hawaiian language, develops and shares tools, and seeks financial support from new sources  to conserve Hawaiian plants.

Formed in 2016, Laukahi: the Hawai‘i Plant Conservation Network is an independent non-profit entity working to implement the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation. Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance Foundation is our fiscal sponsor.

To learn more about how our program formed, please check out the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation.

Mission: To enhance and expand plant conservation in Hawai‘i by uniting our collective efforts, aligning our shared goals towards a more comprehensive approach and promoting awareness of Hawai‘i’s significant contribution to global biodiversity conservation.

Vision: Laukahi envisions successful efforts by Hawai‘i’s plant conservation community that prevent extinction of native species and their habitats, and builds awareness of Hawai‘i’s significant contribution to global biodiversity conservation.

The Laukahi Advisory Council is a volunteer effort by: Emma Anders (Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance Foundation), Mark Burgman (UH Mānoa, School of Life Sciences), Susan Cordell (US Forest Service), Don Drake (UH Mānoa & Lyon Arboretum), Matthew Keir (DLNR-DOFAW ), Barbara Kennedy (Bishop Museum), Randy Kennedy (Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance Foundation), Elliott Parsons (Pacific-RISCC, UH), Talia Portner (Honolulu Botanical Gardens), Raedelle Van Fossen (Lyon Arboretum), Seana Walsh (National Tropical Botanical Garden), and Lauren Weisenberger (US Fish and Wildlife Service – Chair).

The Laukahi Network Coordinator is Kimberly Shay. Contact her at: coordinator@laukahi.org.

Laukahi has a growing number of partners that help to implement the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation by supporting our initiatives, conducting field work to protect native habitats, propagate and secure propagules in ex situ facilities, and do research to inform strategies.

Mahalo to all our partners!
